Inclusion at Kidsborough

A Culture Of Inclusion

Kidsborough puts our inclusion practices front and center, starting from registration to gain understanding of our students’ and families’ needs.

How we differentiate our program

1.

Offering quiet spaces and sensory tools within program

2.

Providing regular curriculum regarding themes of inclusion

3.

Providing appropriate resources and materials to families for a variety of needs

4.

Continual staff training to stay current on best practices and education

When students require more support, we offer:

  • Programmatic consultation with our in-house behavior team
  • Facilitated parent meetings to help build trusting and understanding relationships between the program community and home
  • Screening with our behavior specialists
  • Referrals for additional services as appropriate

Ofrenda Activity – Día de los Muertos

One of our staff facilitated a meaningful Ofrenda activity last month in celebration of Día de los Muertos. He is of native Mexican descent and shared traditions that his family has carried with them from their home. He explained to the children what this holiday represents and its importance for many Hispanic families across the country.

Activity: Ofrenda
Supplies: Marigold petals, LED candles, poster board, and boxes

How it Worked:
Children used markers to draw or write pictures of people or pets in their lives that they miss or wish they could see more often. Afterward, each child took a handful of marigold petals and bowed their head, sending a message to their loved ones. They then placed their “offering” (petals) into a box in front of the display.

They also learned that when you see a glowing orange light, it is said to be a sign from loved ones that their message has been received.
